Fall into Adventure

Fall is all about the color, but add to it a bit of adventure and it becomes a fall you'll not soon forget. From the water to the trail, through the trees or by rail, leaf peeping in Summers County, West Virginia will take your breath away.

Take to the trees on an aerial adventure that brings you up close and personal with those ever changing leaves. Pipestem Peaks Zipline Tour will carry you through the Bluestone Gorge on nine awe-inspiring zips, three of which cross the Bluestone National Scenic River. Here you’ll be over 300 feet off the ground and you’ll reach speeds up to 50 MPH. Now that’s what we call a fall foliage tour!

If flying through the trees at 50 MPH is a bit too fast for your lifestyle, you can always slow it down on the trails. Riverside or mountainside, our trails will lead you to some pretty stunning views. Giddy-up on horseback at Pipestem Resort State Park and enjoy the colors atop your new four-legged friend. The trails at Bluestone State Park will give you snapshot views of Bluestone Lake that are totally tweetable. The vibrancy of fall is magically intensified when you add a mountain sunset to the mix. Try Canyon Rim Trail to Heritage Point for the chance to soak in the setting view.

Fall colors on the New River Gorge National River

Water, water everywhere! From the beauty of Bluestone Lake to the ever popular rivers, Summers County waterways provide plenty of opportunities to explore the waterside. We are at the confluence of three amazing rivers: The New River Gorge National River, the Bluestone National Scenic River, and the Greenbrier. Each offers spectacular vantage points for spying reds, yellows and oranges, as well as (if you’re paying attention) a bald eagle. You can take a guided trip or go it alone, bring a kayak or rent one. Immerse yourself in the natural surroundings of the rivers.

Sandstone Falls New River Gorge National River

And then there’s Sandstone Falls... This is one of those places where it doesn’t much matter what the leaves are doing, the view here is always amazing! Sandstone Falls stretches the width of the New River Gorge National River at 1,500 feet and drops 15 to 25 feet. It marks the transition of the New River from a broad river to a narrow mountain river roaring through a deep boulder strewn gorge. The falls is everyone’s favorite!

All aboard for Adventure! Autumn Colors Express will take you on a color explosion train ride through the New River Gorge, from Huntington, WV to the Hinton Historic District. Once in Hinton you can discover the town's history on a self guided Walking Tour. The timing of this rail trip also coincides with Railroad Days. This annual festival includes carriage rides, live music, model trains, and vendors selling anything from local honey to local art. It all happens in late October, perfect for catching the vibrancy of fall.

However you define adventure, and whether the leaves are changing colors or falling from the trees Summers County will inspire. It's peaceful here, and playful. #ExploreSummersCounty #WherePeacefulMeetsPlayful
