Rivers & Lakes

Summers County is home to some of the most scenic rivers and lakes in southern West Virginia. From the New River and Bluestone River to mountain lakes like Bluestone Lake and Mountain Valley Lake, visitors can enjoy fishing, kayaking, paddling, boating, and peaceful days on the water across the county.

BLUESTONE LAKE

Bluestone Lake is the third-largest lake in West Virginia, created by the Bluestone Dam. With over 2,000 acres of water, it’s ideal for boating, fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing, with easy access throughout the year.

Bluestone National Scenic River

BLUESTONE NATIONAL SCENIC RIVER

The Bluestone River flows for 77 miles, with its lower 10.5 miles designated as a National Scenic River. Visitors enjoy fishing, paddling, and scenic floats, with access at Pipestem Resort State Park, Bluestone State Park, and the Lilly Recreation Area.

GREENBRIER RIVER

Flowing 173 miles before joining the New River, the Greenbrier River offers calm, family-friendly paddling, tubing, and fishing. Its gentle current and scenic banks make it one of the most popular float rivers in the region.

LONG BRANCH LAKE

Located at Pipestem Resort State Park, Long Branch Lake transforms into Adventure Lake during the summer, featuring inflatable water attractions and family-friendly swimming alongside scenic mountain views.

MOUNTAIN VALLEY LAKE

Mountain Valley Lake is a quiet, 39-acre reservoir known for peaceful paddling, fishing, and scenic reflection views. It’s a perfect spot for visitors seeking a calm, uncrowded water experience.

Fall Fishing New River

NEW RIVER

The New River flows north for over 320 miles through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Its lower 53 miles form the New River Gorge National Park, offering world-class paddling, fishing, and iconic Appalachian scenery.
